Kerrison footplate selection is important when going into any type of spine surgery. Ultra-thin footplates are designated for the most delicate use during Anterior Cervical Discectomies or Fusions. Being ultra-thin, the surgeon can manipulate this right between tight anatomy to make a perfect bite. For tougher procedures, thin footplates can be utilized. However, caution must be made when selecting an appropriate width for the desired cut โ€“ a
2mm thin footplate is designed for delicate use only. Finally, standard footplates are best suited for gross dissection and removal of large fragments; being extra heavy-duty built, it can stand up to most types of procedures.

Kerrison rongeurs feature an ejector that allows for easy yet effective cleaning during use, as it efficiently ejects any fragments of bone produced by the instrument. At the end of the procedure the collected bone can then be used to augment the fusion โ€˜bedโ€™ created by the surgeon. Some Kerrisonโ€™s boast their own unique ejector with a pin-style diameter which varies with each bite. This specialized design prevents bioburden from becoming stuck within the Kerrison and makes for quicker cleaning in between operations.

Kerrison rongeurs can also be equipped with non-Ejector technology. They allow surgeons to efficiently and continuously work without having to clear out bone fragments. While it can create a bit of a challenge when cleaning, since bioburden directly enters the working channel, German stainless steel and a ceramic coating can provide protection from any potential contaminants entering the surgical site.
